DHA from cod liver oil

DHA is a long-chain omega-3 fat and one of the main structural fats in the brain. It is the reason the formula is built around an oil rather than a dry tablet, and it is the only ingredient here with an authorised brain claim behind it in Great Britain: DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function, and that claim applies to a daily intake of 250mg.

The oil in Enervia is cod liver oil, which is a traditional UK source of both DHA and naturally occurring vitamin A. That matters practically: it is why the capsule is best taken with a meal, and why it should not be stacked with a separate high-dose vitamin A or cod liver oil product without advice.

If you already eat two portions of oily fish most weeks — mackerel, sardines, salmon, herring — you are already getting a meaningful amount of DHA from food, and a supplement is filling a smaller gap than the adverts imply.

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid, a fatty building block found in the membranes of cells throughout the body and concentrated in nerve tissue. It occurs in food in small amounts, most notably in offal and some fish, and diets low in those foods tend to be low in it.

There is no authorised health claim for phosphatidylserine in Great Britain, so we cannot tell you what it does for you, and we will not. What we can tell you is what it is, that researchers study it in the context of memory and cognition, and that the amount in each capsule is printed on the label so you can compare it with anything else you are considering.

Choline

Choline is an essential nutrient the body uses to build cell membranes and to make acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory and muscle control. Eggs, liver, fish, beans and cruciferous vegetables are the main food sources, and intakes in the UK are often modest, particularly in people who avoid eggs.

Choline currently carries no authorised cognitive claim on the GB register, so this section is description, not promise. It is in the formula because it is a recognised essential nutrient with an established role in the body, not because we can claim an effect for it.

Lion's mane mushroom extract

Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom eaten for centuries in East Asia and now widely sold in the UK as a supplement ingredient. Enervia uses a concentrated extract of the fruiting body.

No health claim is authorised for lion's mane in Great Britain. Anyone telling you it is proven to improve memory, or to affect any medical condition, is going beyond what the evidence and the rules allow. We include it as a well-known food-derived ingredient and publish the amount.

If you have a mushroom allergy or have reacted to fungal ingredients before, this formula is not for you.

Vitamin B12

B12 is the second ingredient with authorised claims behind it: it contributes to normal psychological function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Those two claims are on the GB register and can be used honestly.

B12 is also the nutrient most worth paying attention to as you get older. Absorption depends on stomach acid, which tends to decline with age, and several common long-term medicines reduce absorption further. Anyone following a vegan diet has to get it from fortified food or a supplement, because it is found naturally in animal foods.

Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is the reddish carotenoid that gives salmon, trout and shrimp their colour. It is fat-soluble, which is why it sits well in an oil-based capsule.

It has no authorised health claim in Great Britain. It is included as a naturally coloured, fat-soluble antioxidant compound that pairs with the oil in the formula, and again the amount is on the label rather than hidden in a blend.

The capsule itself, and what is not in it

Always read the label on the bottle you receive. Formulations and excipients can be updated, and the bottle in your hand is the definitive list — not a web page, ours included.

  • No caffeine, guarana or other stimulants — it will not keep you awake.
  • No proprietary blends: every active amount is printed on the bottle.
  • No artificial colours added for appearance.
  • Contains fish. Not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
  • Not suitable for under-18s, and not intended for pregnant or breastfeeding women without medical advice.

How to compare this list with another product

Turn any label over and look for four things: the DHA figure in milligrams rather than the total omega-3 headline; whether every ingredient amount is published; whether the health claims used appear on the GB register; and what the refund policy actually promises. A long ingredient list at token amounts is easier to print than a short one at meaningful amounts.

That test is the same whether you end up buying Enervia or something else, and we would rather you used it than took our word for anything.

This is likely to suit you if

  • Adults who rarely eat oily fish and want DHA and B12 covered in one daily capsule
  • People who want every ingredient amount published rather than hidden in a blend
  • Anyone who would rather take one capsule than manage four or five bottles

This is not for you if

  • Anyone with a fish, shellfish or mushroom allergy
  • Vegetarians and vegans — the DHA comes from cod liver oil
  • Under-18s
  • Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive, without medical advice
  • Anyone on anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, until a GP or pharmacist has said it is fine

Common questions

What are the ingredients in Enervia?

DHA from cod liver oil, phosphatidylserine, choline, lion's mane mushroom extract, vitamin B12 and astaxanthin, in a once-daily capsule. The exact amount of each is printed on the bottle, and there are no proprietary blends hiding the figures.

Does Enervia contain fish?

Yes. The DHA comes from cod liver oil, so the product contains fish and is not suitable for anyone with a fish allergy, or for vegetarians and vegans. Check the allergen line on the bottle before you take it.

Does Enervia contain caffeine or stimulants?

No. There is no caffeine, guarana or other stimulant in the formula, which is why most people take it in the morning with breakfast without it affecting their sleep.

Is there gluten or lactose in Enervia?

The declared allergen is fish. Because formulations and packaging can be updated, always read the allergen statement on the bottle you receive, and email support@getenervia.co.uk if you need the current specification before ordering.

Can I take Enervia with a multivitamin?

Often yes, but check for overlap first — particularly vitamin B12 and vitamin A, as cod liver oil naturally contains vitamin A. If you are unsure, take both labels to a pharmacist before combining them.
